The book bears a Sedbergh National School  label for regular attendance 1904 for Ernest Gibson

The binding has a look of William Morris

The first free end paper has been removed, and the stitching has broken allowing the first section of the book (14 pages) to be loose  but not yet detached, with careful use it will not be a problem.

The book is written in the first person and predates Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, which was published in 1877
