Before the 2nd world war John Hislop Hislop was a very successful amateur rider on the flat and a racing journalist, that part of his life was covered in his book Far From A gentleman, this book follows on to his exploits during the war, he joined up in 1939 and took part in the evacuation of Dunkirk and in an S.A.S. parachute operation behind German lines in the Vosges Mountains in France, for which he was awarded The Military Cross.
Anything But A Soldier is not a military history, but as a personal account of his war years.
