| Dr Gordon S Cantle MSc. Tech., MIMechE. |
Published 1993, 12"x 8" (30 x 20cm) 81 pages, illustrated throughout with line drawings. Very good condition. A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS ON HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGES AND PARTS by Dr Gordon S Cantle, MSc. Tech., MIMechE. This book is a series of articles first published individually in various magazines. Such was the importance of Dr Cantle's work, that they were brought together in one volume as shown.
Doctor Gordon Cantle's interest in carriages arose more than twenty years ago, apparently through the revival of an earlier awareness, learned from family craftsmen, of the basic forging processes involved in the making of such items as axles, springs and chains. As a result he has been able to bring together a great deal of hitherto uncollated information on more detailed aspects of nineteenth-century horse-drawn vehicles.
The book is split into four sections covering carriage design and construction, Wheels and wheel making, Springs and axles and Carriage parts. This is a serious work and explains how and why various components of a carriage work.
